Sure, this isn’t so much a tip, as it is a suggestion. The gorillapod by Joby has got to be one of the coolest artifacts that you can add to your arsenal. I won’t go into the importance of a good tripod (we’ll cover that later, I promise) however, suffice it to say that every photographer needs a couple of tripods. This thing bends and holds in the most precarious places enabling you to get the shots from the best angles. I’ll be ordering one soon.

I’ve had a few of these - initially the small version to use with a little Canon Ixus, and then later the DSLR version. The DSLR version in particular is very robust and will keep the camera still.
At one point, the top of one of the legs developped a crack in it, but after talking to Joby and sending them a photo of the problem, they sent me a replacement that arrived very soon afterwards.
If you get one - you’ll love it I’m sure
Incidentally, I do use a proper tripod as well, but this thing bends nicely in to my camera bag for when I’m travelling (relatively) light.
