Get Close and Personal for Better Portraits

This really is a simple tip for Your Photo Tips readers. When composing an image, especially if your subject is a person, fill the frame with the subject. Get really close!

This works well to eliminate cluttered backgrounds and keep the viewer’s eyes on your subject. A really close portrait of a person, especially when done with a wide angle lens, can add a newer more interesting perspective on your portraits.

As a digital photographer you can try this on some of your older portraits as well. Just open up an old image of a person in your image editor and crop in closer. See what a dramatic difference it can make. Of course it is best to capture your close up portraits in camera as opposed to cropping in post processing, but you can still do it for practice purposes.
