This week’s “Featured Photoblog” is Photo-Africa Blog! Photo-Africa is a collection of over 15 photographers and professional field guides working in the wilderness of ,you guessed it, Africa. I really wanted to highlight this photoblog, not just for the fantastic wildlife photography that can be found there, but also to make note of a website using a blogging platform to help bring attention to the main purpose of their website. Photo-Africa is a stock image website that uses a photoblog to keep their content fresh.
I have not spoken directly to the owners of Photo-Africa, but I can say that whether they know it or not, that text filled photoblog is probably doing more for their website, as far as search engines go, than they realize. Here’s the deal, Google likes blogs that are updated often with focused topics in niche areas. With every post that comes from that photoblog they slowly, but surely, are climbing the ranks of search engines, therefore exposing the website to more traffic and more sales (so long as they have their website optimized properly).
Here’s where we turn this into a short lesson.
Can your business or profile benefit from a frequently updated blog?
Of course it could!
As photographers we tend to think creatively while working on our photographs, but it’s equally important to think outside the box when it comes to all of life’s affairs. Want to look good to the boss? Why not suggest running a company blog to keep that old website fresh with content, news, or company events? You could even include pictures of your workplace, the people that work there, new products or whatever. The point is to keep new content rolling.
We’ve discussed references on why you should start a photoblog and how in the photoblog extravaganza edition of Weekend Perusing in the past, but it might be time for a review if you haven’t started your photoblog yet.
I also suggest reading Why You Should Blog over at SEOmoz.org.
Now, in photo-blogosphere news:
Over at Digital Photography School there’s a great article on How to Do an Editorial Fashion Photography Spread. A great read especially if fashion photography is where you’d like to head.
Jeff at PhotoWalkPro has an ongoing series about self publishing photo-books. I’ve been interested myself into the matter as I’ve only ever made books for my clients and for my studio samples, never my own personal work. I’d start with his review of Blurb which is probably the road I will take (I’ve heard good things about the company).
Visual Candies interviews Bryan Shutmaat in When Poetry Meets Photography. I’ve seen Bryan’s work before and was glad to see him get an interview because a) he’s a great photographer and b) he’s a fellow Texan.
Do you love tattoos? I do. I have tattoos and love to photograph tattoos. I love photography, but do I love photography enough to get a photography tattoo? Hmmm…
Here’s a question: When are the guys at Fine Art Photoblog going to pick out their next two artists? I’m very curious about their process.
Have a fantastic weekend everyone.
