While I'm not sure about those particular cameras - get something that takes good pictues in auto mode but also has some manual features that you may be able to monkey around a bit with. What good is all the manual features in the world if you don't know how to use them? There is something nice to be said about being able to put your camera in auto mode and just go!

B&H is an amazing business. Their superstore in NY is out of this world. But their customer service over the phone has been poor for me. Right now they are getting a lot of heat for hiring practices, but is all a joke.

Always good advice. Get a feel for how the camera fits in your hand and see how your brain works with navigating the menus.

This is actually really good advice. Beyond the computers inside the camera are the quality of lenses. Legacy can really have a substantial impact on the glass and user interface of the cameras.

One of the best things you can do is go to the store, place the camera in your hand, and get a good feel for the camera before you buy it.

You'd be surprised how you like or dislike a camera after you hold it.

If you’re a beginner (like me) and looking at point-and-shoot digital cameras, it’s a good rule of thumb to limit your search to brands that have a pre-digital history of quality camera making (ex. Canon, Nikon, Leica, etc) rather than computer companies who got into cameras because of their digital expertise (ex. HP, Panasonic, Casio, etc). Of course, there are exceptions on both sides of the equation, so your mileage may vary.

Spend the most you can afford because a good digital camera will last you several years as long as you take good care of it.
