Open Discussion: When You’re Ill…

I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck.  Not sure what ailment has me down but I’m in no means capable of putting together a solid post about photography tips for you today (or was I yesterday for that matter).

Instead I’ll spend most of the day curled in a ball watching TV and looking at photo books.

Curious…what do you do when you’re not well?  I’m hard pressed to come up with anything neat or smart photography related to suggest for when you’re ill.  Perhaps it’s because my brain seems to be working at half capacity?

Maybe I’ll just spend a little time on Flickr at our wonderful Flickr Group (see how I managed to get a plug in there?).

  • IMO rest require when you are sick. You can collect some images and collect new books and article photography related.
  • I can't say that I combat illness by doing photography related stuff. My favourite passtime is to sleep as much as possible until I feel better. Generally when my appetite comes back I know I'm on the mend.
  • Sorry to hear that Damien. I normally watch TV when I'm sick. Mostly stuff like National Geographic, etc. Basically, anything calm, relaxing and informative to sooth yourself. No loud action movies or anything. Hope you get well soon.

    Till then,

    Jean
  • Having just gone through two weeks of absolute nastiness, I found that I turned toward things I could shoot in my office/studio. I've always got ideas of some kind for macro work or other small-ish setup shots, and when I'm ill, I don't have the energy to do much more than execute those.

Now that I'm well, it's back to the great outdoors!
  • Sometimes when you are sick it is best to just sit back and get some rest. Your body may not recover as quickly if you keep yourself too busy. Maybe it is best to sit back and read a book or surf the web. I find that even if I do work when I am sick, it is often not the most effective work.
  • I browse flickr for inspiration and always find a bunch of great photos to favorite and contacts to add. I also put on my macro lens set and take some experimental abstract photos of anything really really close up.
  • Wow- sorry you're not feeling well! There's a lot of stuff floating around, we've been bitten a couple times this winter already. Hope you're on the up side, soon!

When I'm not feeling well, creative energy is harder to come by. And I'll be honest, if I get put on meds that make me loopy, I consider using photoshop as 'operating heavy machinery,' per the warnings on the bottle- when I've ignored that, I've often had the "what was I THINKING?" experience when I come out of it. But curling up in a blanket with a hot mug of tea or lemon and honey in front of a photo gallery or photo book are great for me. It keeps me down and resting, and I can spend all the time I want staring at a particular image.
  • I'm ill now and have the same problem. Spent last night trying to develop an "illness" related shot (thermometers, tissues, cold medicine, blankets, etc) but couldn't fully develop the idea. Settled for tv, lightroom, flickr, and trying to develop other photo ideas. Any suggestions? :-)
